LANXESS Enters SPE Automotive Innovation Awards Hall of Fame

  • First Plastic-Metal Hybrid Front End Structure Featuring LANXESS Durethan® Engineering Plastic Named 2019 “Hall of Fame” Winner

Pittsburgh, Pa. – November 8, 2019– The first plastic-metal hybrid (PMH) automotive front end structure, engineered by LANXESS with Durethan® high performance plastic and used on the 1999 Ford Focus, has been named the 2019 Automotive Innovation Hall of Fame award winner by the Automotive Division of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE®). LANXESS, along with representatives from the team of companies originally involved in developing this part, was recognized during the 49th Annual SPE Automotive Innovation Awards Competition & Gala at the Burton Manor in Livonia, Michigan, on Wednesday, November 6. 

 

“It is a great honor to be among some of the industry’s most creative and intelligent works of automotive engineering as a recipient of this award,” said Jose Chirino, Americas Technical Director, LANXESS High Performance Materials business unit. “Since its invention almost 30 years ago, LANXESS plastic-metal hybrid technology has become an established and important method for the lightweight construction of parts ranging from front end structures to seating to brake pedals and more, and we are continuing to build upon and expand this technology at LANXESS today.”

 

The PMH front end structure was designed by LANXESS and made with LANXESS’ Durethan BKV30H2.0 polyamide resin (a 30 percent glass-filled, heat-stabilized PA6) with a steel insert. Compared to a steel structure, the PMH part enabled a weight reduction of 40 percent and a 30 percent cost reduction.  Combining the great design freedom, and lower density of glass-filled PA6 with the strength, stiffness and low thermal expansion properties of metal, LANXESS PMH technology enabled a lighter part with higher load capacity and higher torsional stiffness compared to open sheet metal profiles, higher precision in production and use, and higher integration of functional elements.

 

To be considered for the SPE Hall of  Fame Award, an automotive plastic or composite component must have been in continuous service in some form for at least 15 years and broadly adopted in the automotive industry. LANXESS’ plastic-metal hybrid technology has been successfully used in more than 70 applications and more than 70 million parts have been manufactured worldwide utilizing this technology. 

 

Alongside LANXESS as the material supplier, the companies involved in developing the first PMH front end application were Ford Motor Company (OEM), Visteon (system supplier and molder/processor) and Misslbeck (toolmaker). 

 

The SPE Automotive Innovation Awards Program is the world’s oldest and largest recognition event in the automotive and plastics industries. Dozens of teams made up of OEMs, tier suppliers and polymer producers submit nominations for the Year’s Most Innovative Use of Plastics. The annual event draws over 800 OEM engineers, automotive and plastics industry executives, and media.
